Great Beer Expo was an Ocean of Philly’s Beloved IPAs for Beer Week
Photos, story by Clare Shepherd This is the most important thing this article has to say: go try Free Will Brewing’s Community Kolsch. Nearly every brewery at the 8th annual Great Beer Expo brought their most popular IPA. Philadelphia is, as one brewer put it, a crowded marketplace for this style: a representative from Double Nickel, one of the two newest companies at the event, said that if a company calls a distributor saying they have an IPA, or a pale ale, they won’t even get a call back. “It’s a crowded marketplace,” said one brewer. “When it comes to beer, if you can make it in Philadelphia, you can…

Creative Chef at Atlantic City’s Cuba Libre is an Artist in the Kitchen
Photos, story by Lou Perri Exploring several of Atlantic City’s Cuba Libre‘s summer fare recently, this explorer met with the very creative senior chef, Kevin Couch, who oversees the chain’s kitchens inside the Tropicana. Chef Couch proves to be a master creator of his selected entrees, including the signature plate, Seafood Paella, seen here, on a bed of Saffron long grain rice, features an assortment of mussels, clams, large shrimp, and a split Maine lobster tail. A roasted piquillo salad also comes with this delectable masterpiece. Baby octopus gives this dish another artistic touch. The new summer specialties include a grilled artichoke heart, with salt cured tomatoes and feta cheese…

Scoliosis Fusion Surgery and Scars Only Make Me Stronger
Story, photos by Cassie Hepler You know it’s funny. I didn’t know how having scoliosis surgery would effect my modeling and acting career. But surprisingly it only made it – and me – stronger. Apparently everyone is not a shallow Hollywood jerk face we are all lead to believe. People barely notice the scars and if they do, a simple retouch in Photoshop or Lightroom clears them up in one fell swoop. As humans, we are not perfect. It is our imperfections that make us beautiful. Since healing from surgery, I feel like a new, better version of myself. The kind of person who doesn’t take crap from anyone and…

Float on a Sea of Epsom Salt Water at Halcyon Floats in Roxborough
Photos, story by Cassie Hepler It’s big in Vegas. Well, then again everything with the word “detox” is big in Vegas for after late night debauchery purposes. But we were glad to run across Halcyon Floats in Roxborough on a random cold Spring day. With two years of business under their belts with (smaller tank) locations in Germantown and Northern Liberties, we were glad to go to the location with the largest tanks for that non-claustrophobic feeling. Why would anyone want to float on 900 lbs of silky epsom salt water kept at body temps (93 to 95.7 degrees) that makes you completely buoyant? It’s “a relaxation and therapeutic technique that involves restricting…

Square 1682’s Kickoff Party gets Philly in the Mood for Summer Lovin’
Photos, story by Deja Cromartie Restaurant Square 1682 located in the Rittenhouse section of the city, kicked off Summer the right way with its “Summer in The City” event. Guests enjoyed delicious bites prepared by Chef Caitlin Mateo and summer inspired cocktails in the restaurant’s patio. Square 1682’s is a tribute to William Penn, Pennsylvania’s founding father, who created Rittenhouse Square and four other similar plazas in order to establish urban open spaces in the heart of the city. Like Penn, the restaurant has a vision for the future as well by implementing sustainability measures throughout the restaurant which include the in-house herb garden, locally sourced produce, and energy conscious engineering of the building design.…
