Exploring The Comcast Building and Concourse Shops in Center City

Photos, story by Lou Perri

Explore Philly recently re-visited the exciting Comcast Building at 1701 John F. Kennedy Boulevard in downtown Philadelphia.

According to the site’s information, designed by Robert A. M. Stern Architects, Comcast Center is a 58-story, 975′ high office tower encompassing approximately 1,200,000 rentable square feet, including 36,000 square feet of restaurant and retail space; multiple three-story stacked atria; a one-half acre landscaped public park; a new entrance to Philadelphia’s main suburban station via a dramatic 120 foot-high glass enclosed winter garden; a 500-seat concourse-level dining court and an 87 private-space underground parking garage. It incorporates a sustainable design approach and was awarded LEED® – CS Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, making it one of the tallest, urban green office buildings in the United States. The tower officially opened in June of 2008 and serves as the new world headquarters for Comcast Corporation

The Market & Shops at Comcast Center offer a wonderful array of restaurants, specialty food purveyors and high end retailers. Conveniently located on the lower level of Comcast Center, The Market & Shops is directly accessible from Suburban Station and provides an exciting dining and shopping location for the surrounding offices and apartment communities. Whether you stop by for a quick breakfast, grab lunch from your choice of twelve fabulous eateries or to pick up dinner, you are sure to find something deliciously out-of-the-ordinary.

Explore Philly visited the shops in the Comcast concourse. Many are traditional Philadelphia icons like Termini’s bakery, a South Philadelphia tradition that this writer enjoyed when he was a youngster. Termini has a huge selection of Italian pastries and shows off many cakes decorated for special occasions. The shops also featured DiBruno Brothers, another Philly favorite, which offers a variety of Italian specialties, beautiful cheeses, and other fine foods. Sook Hee’s Produce, another shop, offers a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables.  Owner Sook Hee Seo prides herself in bringing interesting varieties to her customers and those who shop in the concourse.

The concourse shops also offer unique events like the Market Express Wednesday, August 19th from 4:00 p.m-6:00 p.m. Then, you can Take Away for Two! Grab, a delicious, ready-to-go dinner for
two for $19.99 and don’t miss your train!
