Husband and Wife Duo Making Waves with Balboa Supper Club at New Hope Winery

Don’t let New Hope Winery fool you.
There is not a vineyard there, the grapes are actually located in Erie, Pa. and shipped all the way to New Hope, Pa. Well known for its sweet Pennsylvania table wine, the charming wine and gift shop is housed in a rustic 18th century barn, located right between New Hope and Peddler’s Village since 1993.
The New Hope Winery showcases a large selection of fine Pa wines, accessories and gourmet foods from light, fruity whites and versatile blush wines to sophisticated reds and of course seasonal fruit wines. The tagline there is, “We’re not just a winery!” and that is true because in fact they are not a winery at all but an event venue.
And with that in mind, Balboa Catering with a home base restaurant in Kensington/Fishtown, brought their husband and wife talents to the suburbs on a gorgeous fall day.
“Imagine walking into a room not knowing anyone and after breaking bread and enjoying a few courses of delicious food, leaving that night with new friends. That is what our supper club experience is like! We believe in the concept of community. But enough about what it is, let’s show you what it all looks and tastes like!
There are a variety of event venues to accommodate any size event up to 250 people for social or corporate events. We have. The New Hope Winery is also Bucks County’s premier live music destination. You can enjoy artists as you’ve never seen them before in an intimate, cabaret-style seating concert venue.
Individual and group wine tastings are available at the wine bar where friendly and knowledgeable New Hope staff can guide you through the choices and offer advice on wine and food pairings.
Spend time browsing the wine and gift shop, complete with unique gifts, gourmet food items and wine accessories. Enjoy unique antiques scattered throughout the store as well.
One of our favorite dish of the nights was the smoked and beet cured mid-Atlantic salmon agro dulce beets, grapefruit, potato chips, goat yogurt, beet cashew puree, breakfast radish, umami dirt and pomegranate.
Welcome to the chef show with the Jerusalem Artichoke Soup with shitake mushrooms, white asparagus, kohlrabi, apples, black garlic puree, plumped raisons, toasted almonds and nasturtium.
Chambourcin wine paired with the steak and side plated with smoked baby carrots, broccoli puree, maitake bread pudding, charred onion petals, crispy celery root, steak jus and red onion jam.
Executive Chef of Balboa Catering, Alex Garfinkel, has spent the last decade developing his talents at a collection of iconic eateries. He opened his career at the pinnacle of French cuisine in Philadelphia, receiving a Francophile influence from his time at the acclaimed Le Bec Fin and Lacroix. He further honed his talents at Morimoto and Amada, where he learned food preparation and presentation in the distinct styles of two Iron Chefs. He then traveled abroad to Spain, studying traditional Spanish tapas & molecular gastronomy during a year working under Andoni Luis Aduriz of Mugaritz — one of the top 10 restaurants in the world.
Overall, we love the idea of eating in interesting locations and pairing businesses together. The menu was not the same when we arrived as on the website/social media however we were perfectly pleased to enjoy what was served. Once the kinks are all worked out, this dynamic duo will be kicking culinary butt and taking names.
