Mark and Donnie Wahlberg Bring Wahlburgers Franchise to Fishtown’s Piazza at Schmidt’s

Story, photos by Cassie Hepler

You got the right stuff, baby.

(Sorry, not sorry. This video had to be added so you, too, can have the ear worm while you read this story.)

Meat, cheese, tater tots and booze is a great way to put a smile on anyone’s face and that’s the goal for the Wahlberg’s Wahlburgers growing empire (say that 10 times fast). Not only is Marky Mark still killing it and shredded for his movies, they also have Donnie still touring with New Kids on the Block… possibly coming soon to a venue near you in Philly too. Will Donnie make an appearance at Wahlburgers while in Philly with NKOTB? You’ll have to come and find out.

If you can’t make it to the opening party, no worries. You can always check out the A&E Reality series which has spawned from following the burger empire to kind of stalking the whole family, especially the two celebrity brothers out of the eight kids in the Catholic family (no condoms allowed, kids).

Wahlburgers has reworked its menu to showcase chef inspired dishes including a new host of hearty and lighter offerings. Take a look and you’ll see that oldest Wahlberg brother Chef Paul has put his own spin on Wahlberg family favorites like Mom’s Sloppy Joes and Mac ‘n Cheese with Smoked Bacon. Cut the carbs and check out the new Chopped Salad Bowl, a flavorful combination of your favorite burger or sandwich without the bun, chopped and tossed with fresh mixed greens. And the Smahlburgs (adorable) in your family will be thrilled to find out that they now serve fries with everything on our kid’s menu.

While the menu has evolved, one thing that remains the same is their commitment to serving the freshest possible meals and providing a place where your family and friends can make fond memories. We experienced a happy birthday sing-along right behind our booth which was sweet. But enough about the joint, let’s see some food porn!

Wahlburgers takes over the tip of the Piazza where a diner used to be.
Keep an eye out for the Wahlburgers food truck roaming the streets of Philadelphia.
A view from the front entrance of the new Wahlburgers burger joint.
Parking in the dirt lot across from the Piazza is always free but you can do this too.
Freshly back from a cruise to Bermuda, the Redbrick Mule, Gosling’s ginger beer and local Red Brick whiskey, sounded like a nice mix and indeed it was tasty but potent.
Wahlburgers General Manager David Liebert takes us on a tour of the outdoor space.
Just in case you can’t find it, look for the giant wrought iron W’s flanking the outdoor space.
There’s a little humor in the menu here with the government cheese aka those big blocks of cheese that had to feed 8 kids and the 3 story row home they grew up in. Don’t worry, they use actual cheese not the fake stuff.
A Guinness is great way to supplement your meal with hearty carbs. Also spotted on the beer list, Evil Genius. The Purple Monkey Dishwasher gives Guinness a run for the money.

The GM insisted we try the tater tots and we were loving them, I devoured the sweet potato ones while my date enjoyed tots for breakfast.
The Wahlburgers special sauce not too far off from McDonald’s special sauce.
Carving a portabello mushroom sandwich, we opted for the burger in a salad. Hold the dressing on the side unless you like it saturated. The shroom, onions and cheese were bangin’ though.
I’m a french fry freak and these were perfect and the light cheese sauce brought me back to late nights eating mass quantities of cheese fries at PSU.
I tried Mark’s favorite the Thanksgiving Day Sandwich, a turkey burger with all the fixings including house made orange cranberry sauce and roasted butternut squash. It was pink in the middle, light, sweet and tasty with guts pooping out everywhere.
We had to try the thin sliced onion rings. I usually don’t like them but these reminded me of the kind you sprinkle on a casserole and I love those! My date longed for the thick, greasy kind.
The Invincible burger is THE Philly burger with 1/2 pound of beef, bacon, onions and pretzel bun. This was my fave and could fill you up for a day! Meat gluttony perfected.
Carlo’s Bakery makes these adorable, delicious little cupcakes for Wahlburgers which are vanilla and easy to devour.
Kicking up a PB&J a notch this is a Nutella, banana and peanut butter sandwich for dessert. It’s true, Nutella makes everything amazing.

We would have to agree with the Wahlburgers motto: We’re not kidding when we say that MAKING YOU HAPPY, MAKES US HAPPY.
