Feeling United by Flowers at the 195th PHS Philadelphia Flower Show
Sunshine bathes the 195th PHS Philadelphia Flower Show’s welcome banner at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. We HAVE to write about flowers. We have to experience flowers. We have to understand that their flourishing is dependent on an entire ecosystem of grass and dirt and water and sunlight and touch and love. Because when we understand that about the flowers, we will understand that about one another as well. — Jenna Winship Story, photos by Sharon Kozden While I intellectually get that every season has its distinct glory, beauty and allure, truth be told, the winter of my discontent is, well, winter. When it’s dark outside as I leave for work…

Philly Fashion Week’s Winter Wonderland Party Wears It Well at Fashion District Philadelphia
This invite was inspo for my crushed-velvet silver ‘holiday glitz’ dress. Mel Campell wrote that Zadie Smith is today considered something of a fashion icon, but as a bookish youth, she told The Rumpus in 2013, she ‘just wanted to live in the library and wear a sack’. Only when she went to Italy, ‘where beauty is taken seriously and enjoyed and it’s okay to enjoy it,’ did she come to ‘appreciate the idea of a beautiful fabric or a nice dress. I never cared about those things when I was young.’ Story, photos by Sharon Kozden I cannot tell you how much my writer self identifies with Zadie Smith’s 2013 comment in the above…

Christmas Village Unwraps 16th Year in Philadelphia’s LOVE Park and City Hall, Festival of Trees Debuts
Presented by Bank of America, Christmas Village in Philadelphia returned to LOVE Park and City Hall in 2023 for a 16th consecutive year. “This is how Christmas should feel. Full of hope, happiness and new beginnings. Full of love, for those we’re with, those we miss and those we’ve found. This is the best feeling, ever! I don’t know what the future holds but, right now, it feels full of promise and excitement.” ~ Jo Thomas, Finding Love at the Christmas Market Story, photos by Sharon Kozden I was back again at the Wynnewood SEPTA Station last week, taking advantage of my employer’s discounted transit-pass program (a.k.a. JAWNT), which enables…

Philadelphia’s Inis Nua Theatre Company Showcases American Premiere of ‘Meet Me at Dawn’ by Zinnie Harris
Playbill cover and poster design are visually taut and arresting. “Grief is like the ocean; it comes on waves ebbing and flowing. Sometimes the water is calm, and sometimes it is overwhelming. All we can do is learn to swim.” — Vicki Harrison “Everyone can master a grief but he that has it.” — William Shakespeare, Much Ado About Nothing “My life closed twice before its close; It yet remains to see If immortality unveil A third event to me, So huge, so hopeless to conceive As these that twice befell. Parting is all we know of heaven, And all we need of hell.” — Emily Dickinson Story, photos by…

Bank on Delicious Tastes, City Views at Loews Hotel in Philadelphia, PA
When in Philly, stay and eat at Loews Hotel and Bank & Bourbon; both rate high marks in my playbook. “New York is a place where people go to reinvent themselves; Philadelphia is a place where people discover who they are.” – Chef Peter McAndrews Story, photos by Sharon Kozden Maybe like me, you’re a country mouse, living outside Philadelphia’s suburbs while still close enough to identify Philly as your home city. Country life has its pluses: falling asleep to the sounds of crickets, sweet silence for lack of passing vehicles on long and winding roads and land expanses with more nature than neighbor views are just a few. I’m talking…
