Fellow Penn State University Alumni Makes His Mark in Paso Robles, CA with Eberle Winery

Story, photos and video by Cassie Hepler

Eberle Winery is a family-owned jawn from Penn State University alumni! If you didn’t know, I am as well… go lions! Gary Eberle grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania (also like me) and went to PSU on a football scholarship. After graduating with a Bachelor’s of Science in biology, he went to Louisiana State University where he continued his graduate work studying cellular genetics. While attending LSU, Gary developed an appreciation for wine and changed his academic path to become a winemaker. Gary launched his career as a winemaker and as the “Pioneer” of Paso Robles Wine Region by helping to establish his family’s Estrella River Winery & Vineyards. In the late 70’s, he decided to pursue his own project and acquired nearly 64 acres just down the road from Estrella River Winery. Shortly thereafter, Gary released his first Eberle wine, the 1979 Cabernet Sauvignon debuting the iconic boar logo, depicting the German origin of the name Eberle, meaning “small boar.”producer and marketer of premium wines, representing the Eberle Estate, single varieties and designated vineyards. Eberle wines have showcased the history and diverse flavors of the Paso Robles, California area since 1979.

Eberle Winery was once voted Winery of the Year by Wine Enthusiast magazine! Gary Eberle is the “Godfather” of the Paso Robles wine region because he co-founded the AVA, he was the fourth winery established in Paso Robles (now there are more than 200), and was named one of the top 100 influential people in the wine industry. Aged in underground man-made caves with 90+ Point scores, they offer complimentary wine tasting and cave tours and have a Reserve tasting available for a fee. Hours change depending on seasons from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the winter, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the summer. They also offer hosted guest chef winemaker dinners and also available for weddings and private events. Wines produced on the estate include Cabernet, Chardonnay, Viognier, Zinfandel, Vintage Port, Barbera, Sangiovese, Rhone Blends and Muscat Canelli.

Bleeding blue, Eberle played defensive tackle for Joe Paterno at Penn State University from 1962 to 1966. Fast forward to today and Eberle makes 27,000 cases of ultra-premium wine on 64 acres of vineyards. All wines are aged in 17,000 square feet of underground caves with complimentary tours and wine tastings offered daily. There’s also winery cats and two black poodles running around this fun patio forward property! This was our second tasting on a tour and we were quite impressed with this family friendly, laid back property.

We were immediately drawn to these views at Eberle Winery.
