Art Car World Bringing Burning Man Vibes to Douglas, Arizona

Story, photos by Cassie Hepler

Zooming straight away from my bed and breakfast in Bisbee to Douglas, Arizona is a short half hour ride out of the mountains and relatively easy to find at the newish location of Art Car World at 450 E. 8th St. Street, Douglas, AZ 85607. I met up with Harrod Blank, the brains and brand behind the mission outside and he was excited to share his master plans with me.

Harrod has that kind of personality that you immediately take to, or maybe I did because we both have that one parent was all business and the other a hippy background. Regardless, we were fast friends and I could have spent hours talking about his endless adventures around the world. He’s making it his life’s mission to create a space for all the freaks and weirdos from Burning Man to gather and endlessly celebrate art. I’m so down to share his preview story being one myself!

You’ve certainly seen these cars on the interwebs or social media. Fully decked out in whatever medium the artist and owner has in mind, they are hard to miss especially on the road. Talk about getting whiplash! Harrod is creating a museum dedicated to the celebrate and preserve these moments in history a mere minutes from the Mexican border. Currently under construction and Harrod was hesitant on giving an opening date (the website says Sept. 24 to December 31, 2021 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.), Art Car World will feature a permanent collection of 42 popular art cars with some more on a rotating exhibition. Currently open by appointment only, the museum will be bilingual with international festivities planned.

Harrod Blank stands under the Art Car World building he is remodeling. When lit up at night, this is quite a sight to see!
