Because not everybody is a baller especially these days with a fluctuating, erratic economy, there are certainly ways to travel on the cheap and still have a fun and fabulous time! When Red Roof Inn reached out, we were intrigued by the upgrade of the “Plus” feature which is a far cry from your parent’s Red Roof Inn experience.
The difference is wood-style floors, flatscreen TVs, vessel sinks, upgraded towels and spacious workstations and an ergonomic chair. For me at any hotel no matter how fancy, the bed is always a dealbreaker because if you sleep like crap, you’re going to be a cranky beast the next day. Red Roof Inn Plus has Serta mattresses fitted with high-end bedding and comfortable pillows. Normally greeted with a complimentary snack box containing bottled water, orange juice, popcorn, trail mix and two Nature Valley® granola bars, this could change depending on location. Complimentary breakfast is also possibly a wash depending on location because of Covid currently, it’s either non-existent or a brown bag like elementary school. To learn more about the Plus experience, you can visit the website.
Not gonna lie, I was a little concerned going to stay at a Red Roof Inn Plus in the “little Tijuana” section of San Diego, CA aka Chula Vista because it’s so close to the Mexico border. But once I arrived, Sam was very welcoming and put my room right next to his so I felt safe, secure and had a friend nearby if needed. They had just remodeled in April 2020 to only shut down until just recently so everything is fresh and new!
When you work from home (or hotel in this case), you tend to run out of there at quitting time like a bat out of hell wanting to disconnect from anything to do with technology. Lucky me, I was close to the beach in almost every direction for instant detox vibes!
Then it was time to simmer down with a beautiful sunset at Bayside Park, a mere one mile from the hotel.
Before you check out or in depending on your schedule as they are only open Thursday to Sunday or by private appointment, make sure you hit up the Living Coast Discovery Center to learn more about the creatures who live in the Pacific Ocean. Community ran by volunteers, this space is a labor of love and very affordable to some experiences you may never have elsewhere at $10 for adults and $4 for kids!
