Sweets So Good You’ll Swear She’s Psychic – The Pastry Prophet
By: Elizabeth Coffey
Your glass of milk will find its match made in heaven when you call up The Pastry Prophet and put your order in for one of Dana Prophet’s delicious and delectable desserts. From cookies and pies to cakes and scones, your taste buds are in for a treat. I recently had the pleasure of asking this super-star chef and Philadelphia small business owner what makes her tick and why you’ll be on the phone ordering yourself a batch of her completely customizable creations sooner than you think.
Q: What/who inspired your love of baking?
A: Two things: my family and my sweet tooth. I am from a long line of fabulous cooks. Also it’s hard to find delicious treats at a reasonable price. Why look to someone else to do it when I can do it better?
Q: What’s your earliest, fondest kitchen memory?
A: Sadly, I don’t have one. The kitchen is just another family room where magical treats were held.
Q: What makes The Pastry Prophet unique within its industry?
A: Other bakers and pastry chefs like to go over the top and sometimes it loses other aspects like taste and textures. I focus on taste and texture. Using seasonal and local ingredients, I want people to be transported back to the best time of their childhood.
So many people have dietary restraints and cannot indulge in the flavors of their childhood. I know when people find something; it’s usually overpriced and sells out quickly. I’m looking to expand everyone’s waistline.
Q: You say you do nerdy treats; can you give us a few examples?
A: Right now it’s all about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cake pops.
Q: What’s your most popular item?
A: That definitely The Drunk Slut Cherries™. Although I hate working with chocolate because it’s so temperamental (chocolatiers will recognize the pun), TDSCs are becoming a fan favorite. Working with chocolate is a blessing and a curse.
Q: How do you source your ingredients?
A: I try to keep my ingredients seasonal and preferably local. I will make accommodations upon request.
Q: Do you offer any specialty items for people with allergies and dietary restrictions?
A: I made vegan and gluten free items upon request. Please note that if you suffer from severe allergies, I am not Gluten-Free Certificated.
Q: What can someone expect when they choose The Pastry Prophet to cater their event?
A: Delicious desserts and friendly service.
Q: What would you tell people who are considering ordering something from The Pastry Prophet?
A: You won’t regret it.
Q: What are your plans for the future?
A: Right now Philadelphia, then the world!
