Yards Brewing Company loving the ladies with Lady Birds Beer Club

By Cassie Hepler

Newsflash: Ladies like craft beer too.

And if this really is news to you, what rock have you been hiding under all winter?

It’s time to get out, stretch those wings and fly over to Yards Brewing Company to enjoy some stellar seasonal beer with their first ever ladies beer club dubbed Lady Birds Beer.

The first meeting was held on April 1, 2015, while celebrating the release of Unite Red Ale, brewed collaboratively with the women of Yards, Victory Beer & Malteurop North America. In true ladies night honor, the first beer is free with your drink ticket from 5-7 p.m.

Lady Birds Beer Club will meet on the first Wednesday of every month at Yards tasting room (adjacent to the brewery). Each month will feature a freshly tapped craft beer and an activity led by one of the foxy ladies. LBBC’s plan (it already has a moniker!) is to bring women together to enjoy craft beer and each other’s company. Not saying a couple guys didn’t swoop in like hawks to enjoy the view… and who can blame them? This could be better than OKC for all the single ladies. Just sayin’

This first event was just to get everyone together to enjoy the collaborative beer and chat about how the club should take shape. Some pre-projected ideas included drinking beer while knitting (?!?), blackjack (better…), clothing swaps (yes, please. Craft beer loving women are usually hippies environmentally conscious as well after all), beer sensory demos (huh? whatevs, we’ll try anything once), board games (Twister anyone?), yoga in the brewhouse (beer instead of water?), bike mechanics (isn’t that what guys are for?), cooking with beer (while drinking beer, of course)…

The point is to see what talents the ladies have and pimp ’em out to each other. What actually happened at the first meeting were beer drinking ladies who speak foreign languages, a fluent Portuguese speaker, a pickle lady (ummm, no comment), a hula-hooper, a food truck owner, an ethnographer (thanks, Google: “The branch of anthropology that deals with the description of specific human cultures, using methods such as close observation and interviews”), teachers, photographers (that was partly us) and adventurers (also us).

Regardless of what comes out of it, learning is good (especially while drinking beer), MMMkkk?

The master plan? The women of Yards are meeting on Monday, April 13th to organize next month’s meeting. Keep an eye out on their Facebook page for plans for the May and June meetings. And don’t forget their hours are Monday through Sunday from 12-7 p.m. so as not to compete with bars that sell their beer. And for all you die-hard craft beer lovers, you can also take a FREE brewery tour every Saturday and Sunday from 12-4 p.m.
