Explore 24 Hours in the Beautiful French Provençal Town of Lourmarin, France

Story, photos and video by Cassie Hepler

After our amazing experience in Cotignac, France, our press trip group was whisked away by our amazing driver Sophie to experience the charming small town of Lourmarin, France. It is located in the Vaucluse department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region in Southeastern France. The people who live there are called Lourmarinois, which is très (very) difficult to pronounce. Part of the Luberon region, it is composed of three mountain ranges: Lesser Luberon, Greater Luberon and Eastern Luberon. There’s a whole lot of Lou’s happening here and it can be very confusing – especially when you’re not driving and following maps. Just try to remember Lourmarin is located in the French region of Provence, at the foot of the Luberon Massif.

After a little confusion upon arrival where my debit card was stashed in my passport and the front desk lady was saying she already ran it (but didn’t, just a communication error), I handed her my Amex which she recoiled at the sight and said they cannot use that. The French really don’t like American Express like I learned in Nice! So I lay down my Aeroplan MasterCard for a $100 Euro hold which she seemed pleased with and ran through. Remember, always have at least three different international cards! I was not phased as we were there for a minute before back out the door again to explore this charming village so there’s literally no way to spend it.

Sophie pulled over for an epic view of Lourmarin, France and started a trend with all the cars behind us. A popular spot!

A quick overnight at Le Moulin de Lourmarin in Luberon, France! With dinner at Le Bacheto which was like having girl dinner except in an outstanding French cuisine style, we awoke to the bell towers in the morning. Signifying it’s time to wake up and also telling the time by each amount of ding dongs, there was a bustling farmers market that was awaiting us to explore after our delicious buffet breakfast full of espresso and made to order omelets, fruit, croissants and baguettes. This tiny town has a slower, more relaxed pace and deserving of some more exploring for sure! I buzzed around the colorful, lively Provençal market in the morning, photographing all my favorite lifestyle shots, enjoying samples of truffle cheese and pastries, window shopping all the fall fashion… until I bought fuzzy, my new furry white jacket since I was freezing most mornings. Owned by a French company, Le Moulin is part of Beaumier Hotels has properties in unique places like the French Provence, the Alps and the Mediterranean coast. While not my favorite hotel stay of the trip because of the bed below, the town did have its charm which I would like to explore more.

We all loaded in the new van, a Mercedes this time with dual opening doors on each side making for an easier escape. And soon on our way to make a lavender sachet at the Musée de la Lavande! This Lavender Museum in Cabrières-d’Avignon, France is only 10 minutes from the gorgeous village of Gordes, France in Luberon located inside a traditional Provençal house built with dry stones from Gordes and surrounded by a lavender field, olive trees and parasol pines. This picturesque space transports visitors into the authenticity of Provence. The charming atmosphere makes the museum the perfect sanctuary for the rare and precious true lavender, or fine lavender of Provence. Did you know there are two main types of lavender – lavande, fine lavender and lavandin, the hybrid? It was a lovely afternoon learning, smelling, crafting and even enjoying lavender tea. Thank you so much for the roll on oils, they are forever in my luggage to help me relax during travel! Best told by our lovely hostess below, enjoy the story of lavande.
