Story, photos and video by Cassie Hepler

Since 1941, the El Cortez Hotel and Casino has been the place to be in downtown Las Vegas, Nevada located on the infamous Fremont Street. It’s on the National Register of Historic Places and has black and white photos of all the big names running down each wall, boasting days of bygone glitz and glamour. From celebrities to mobsters, it definitely has history – and smoking inside which is a rare find these days. In a happy coincidence, I was going to Las Vegas, Nevada to work with a photographer as a model and he had accidentally booked two nights – the first at the Hilton Polo Towers and the second at the El Cortez Hotel and Casino. I was more excited about the latter but soon learned I should have been more psyched about the first!

This was my third time to Las Vegas officially or so says my memory… the first being a girls trip from Philly for a centennial birthday celebration we dubbed the Vagtastic Voyage more than 10 years ago. We stayed at The Luxor, the one with the Egyptian statues shaped like a pyramid because that was exotic to us back then. I hear it’s quite the shit hole now… It was quite a whirlwind not even a week where one gal got food poisoning from escargots (hint: don’t eat snails in the desert unless you know where they are coming from), I had connected with a Vegas promoter where they will get you into the best and hottest clubs – especially as a group of women – usually with drinks included. I recall a topless pool, many dance clubs, a nice French restaurant dinner and the rest is a blur… so yeah what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas but only because you don’t remember it! I do recall my flight leaving earlier than the rest of the gals and the airline offering to pay me cash for another flight, hotel overnight and lots of food and drink credit but I was running ragged and getting sick so I said no, thanks. The second time was for work and this third time was mostly as well so back to the 2025 Vegas story…

I drove in before the crack of dawn, went to the Teatime in Wonderland experience at The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace for like three hours and checked into the first hotel where I literally lay down and did not get up again until the next morning. It seems I have found my travel limit for driving – 5 hours plus almost 4 hours at The Shops equals dead Cassie. This is actually very important information to know since I travel for work so much and work with tourism boards. I now also know my flight limit too – more than 12 hours makes my body malfunction! If you don’t know, I had a scoliosis fusion back in 2016 and will have another in hopefully more than 10 years now but alas, my neurosurgeon said 20 years for a full fusion so that puts me at 2036 or later hopefully where I will be fused to my hipbones and have no clue what that means mobility wise. I realize I need to do a scoliosis awareness update post soon because it seems everyone thinks I’ve had a fairytale life. Ha, I wish!

The only photo I took at Hilton Polo Towers in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was sunset by the time I checked in with forced $25 valet which fortunately the photographer’s assistant graciously took care of as well as a late checkout. I must have slept for 12 hours that night in that amazing marshmallow bed in room 7311 on the corner and whisper quiet. The irony of them asking for donations to the California fires did not escape me as I asked the front desk doesn’t Hilton have like $14.2 Billion?
After I checked out around noon, it was off to El Cortez Hotel and Casino with free parking for guests and this view from the parking garage. Notice Trump has a fitting stash here! That car was just sitting in the middle of the street with airbags deployed and no one in sight so we all drove around it. The bellman said it happens often here.
My first view of the El Cortez Hotel and Casino on a cold winter day.
Some artwork outside the entrance to El Cortez Hotel and Casino.
A sweet ride parked in a VIP spot at El Cortez Hotel and Casino. Valet parking is available too. The security guy kept joking $50 for a pic which he says works as a joke for some clueless tourists. He was awesome and helpful! Almost all of the staff here was actually.
The entrance to the El Cortez Hotel and Casino. I asked about photography as some casinos ban it but he said just try not to get full frontal faces in it.
To the right when you walk in at El Cortez Hotel and Casino.
To the left, the friendly front desk and bellman at El Cortez Hotel and Casino who held my luggage while waiting for my room to be ready.
Always look up! I saw the fancy stairs and was drawn to them at El Cortez Hotel and Casino.
As a photographer and model, I’m always scouting for epic photoshoot backdrops and this was made for a flowing gown at El Cortez Hotel and Casino.
At the top of the stairs, a spa awaits to soothe your aches and pains at El Cortez Hotel and Casino.
A little sneak peak of some upcoming acts at El Cortez Hotel and Casino.
The Parlour at El Cortez Hotel and Casino, currently a sports TV mecca.
Even the ladies bathrooms had starlets at El Cortez Hotel and Casino.
I wandered around a bit at El Cortez Hotel and Casino.
I’m not a gambler but always on the lookout for free play at El Cortez Hotel and Casino.
There was no free play at El Cortez Hotel and Casino even though the website says otherwise. Beware!
But I was starving for some meat anyways so off to eat I went to Siegel’s 1941 at El Cortez Hotel and Casino.
Loving all the retro photos of people at El Cortez Hotel and Casino.
The restaurant dining room at El Cortez Hotel and Casino. There was a red booth on the wall of single people eating which I joined.
Much like going to an amusement park, we were given bracelets to track us and get into our rooms at El Cortez Hotel and Casino.
I couldn’t resist the Prime Rib special at El Cortez Hotel and Casino for only $20. I was tempted to break Dry January with a bacon Old Fashioned but stood strong. Mentally noting trying that later though! This was perfection with a meaty snack to take to the room later.
Soon I was checking in and they shipped me across the street with all my stuff and bellman in tow at El Cortez Hotel and Casino. I didn’t know they had Cabana Suites but it was like walking into a different planet.
I was loving all the retro vibes here at El Cortez Hotel and Casino.
Don’t mind my hippy pants, they are stretchy and hella comfy at El Cortez Hotel and Casino. A few folks watched the sports in the lobby.
The checkin desk with no one manning or womaning it at El Cortez Hotel and Casino. Winter is slow season everywhere!
A view to the lobby TV with a small gym to the left at El Cortez Hotel and Casino.
The green room at El Cortez Hotel and Casino was interesting… the bed was kind of rock like with floppy pillows and the heater kicks on all night long like a Mac Truck. I slept like complete shit. Also just noticing a random person walking by which I also didn’t like.
The bathroom was also odd which I realized later was a handicapped room with an attempt at a European shower at El Cortez Hotel and Casino. The shower head kept slipping down to the bottom, the toilet ran a lot and the hot water handle didn’t nudge on the sink. Let’s just say I was happy to hightail it out of there at 8 a.m. the next morning.
The good news is the photoshoot happened at lightning speed and new friends were made at El Cortez Hotel and Casino with this rad mural on the side. After some guy passed out in the lobby and was escorted to his room and some other guy projectile vomited, I was ready to be done with Vegas very similar to last time but without the plague lingering. Fremont Street is not it, ya’ll.

When I checked out the next morning, I learned multiple secrets about this vintage space. One, do NOT book on a third party website like Expedia there is a $30 Amenity Fee per night not included and booking through the website is cheaper. Two, do NOT stay in the Suites, try to stay in the tower away from the street noise and human vomit. Three, get a players card so you can rack up upgrades and points for even eating at the restaurant. Live and learn yo, that’s the way of life! Bonus for me, I was contacted by a Vegas Promoter so looks like I’ll be exploring more soon. Funny how life works out sometimes, eh? Overall I would stay again just in the towers away from it all like at the Hilton. It’s low key Las Vegas but I’m sure a hot mess once things heat up again. Until next time Sin City!

I bet during fireworks seasons, this place is lit at El Cortez Hotel and Casino.
