Female cyclists put the pedal to the metal at the annual Manayunk Bike Race
By Jill Beckel For the first time in the event’s 32-year-history, the women’s UCI Road World Cup headlined The Philadelphia International Cycling Classic races in Philly on Sunday, June 7. If you’re from the ‘Yunk, you know that this is one of the biggest events of the year. The cyclists train all year for this big event and it’s known throughout Philly and across the nation. The men’s UCI America Tour/USA Cycling NRC race began at 8 a.m. and the women’s World Cup at noon. ‘A Moment of Zen’ exhibit at The Bazemore Gallery truly is a zen experience with Inna Race of Belarus
By Jill Beckel Saturday, June 13th was a special evening for The Bazemore Gallery with The “A Moment of Zen” exhibit featuring artist Inna Race of Belarus. Located at 4339 Main Street in Manayunk, The Bazemore Gallery is described as “a boutique art gallery.” The owner Lenny Bazemore loves introducing visitors to mid-level and well established contemporary artists. The Bazemore Gallery strives to “exhibit and sell original works of art which create synergy in the home and in the work place.” Visitors of the gallery perused around the exhibit enjoying light snacks of wine, fruit and cheese. Inna, dressed in a beautiful silver sparkly cocktail dress, was very friendly and gracious.…

Tacos, Pizza and Cupcakes – Oh My! The Manayunk StrEAT Food Festival Rocked the Yunk
By Jill Beckel This year’s sixth biannual Manayunk StrEAT Food Festival on Sunday, April 12, featured delicious food, live performances and entertainment. Held in the spring and the fall, this festival of food highlights neighborhood eateries and food trucks. A beautiful, sunny spring day brought out an estimated 40,000 people (!) to Main Street, Manayunk (and starting last year, they finally shut down Main Street for it). Despite the crowded lines, that didn’t stop most people from lining up for their food truck favorites. It was a perfect mix of kids, dogs, ‘Yunkers and people from all over the Philadelphia area. Everyone came hungry and eager to try out an assortment of…

The Mummers Parade: What the hell is a Mummer?
By Cassie Hepler Welcome to one of Philadelphia’s oldest and strangest traditions. It’s the only time of year where adult, uber-straight men can dress up in elaborate costumes – and women’s clothing – and strut down Broad Street in all their glory. And not surprisingly, the drag queens have been recently welcomed back to the show (hello Philly Drag Mafia) thanks to LGBT trailblazer Ian Morrison/Brittany Lynn. The official Mummers Parade is held each New Year’s Day in Philadelphia and is a day-long drinking and revelry occasion downtown and in South Philly, which is believed to be the oldest folk festival in the U.S. However, this year they added on ADVENT’s first Mummers…

The Bazemore Gallery Presents ‘Opening Eyes’ to Africa
Photos, story by Cassie Hepler Tucked away on Main Street in Manayunk across from the always familiar Zesty’s and next to the amazing Chabba Thai, you might almost miss the sign peeking out from above the art gallery. When stepping inside, The Bazemore Gallery will transport you out of Philly and into a chic, Upper East Side art gallery space. The mood changes depending what’s on the walls but there is always something special for the senses. This photography exhibit especially delights my senses as I was also snapping photos as a child – with a Polaroid instant camera then. Without any outside influence, this is Africa through the eyes…
