Pizzeria Vetri is Brick Oven Pizza Served Family Style

Photos, story by Cassie Hepler

Brick oven, thin pizza pie with fluffy crust and only the best and freshest ingredients… that pretty much describes Pizzeria Vetri. We chose to go to the Art Museum area location because if you get there early enough, there’s plenty of parking nearby (other locations near Rittenhouse Square and King of Prussia). Good food, good drinks & good people. Get delivery, dine in but make sure to sign up for the e-mailing list for a free rotolo (trust us, it’s soooo worth it).

Not all pizza is created equal and as a person who eats it at least once a week and have eaten it in Naples, Italy, I can confirm these pizza pies have all the right ingredients to make some authentic circles… or long rectangles depending on what size you order. It’s cool to watch the chefs spinning doughy pies in the air at the open kitchen pizza bar but we could do without the constant metal chairs scraping against the concrete sound effects.

The family style seating is convenient and communal however you get the sense that you have to inhale food and leave quickly, much like a dining hall. Since it only takes about 3 minutes to cook a pizza at 650 degrees in the wood-fired oven, that makes sense. But it takes 3 days to make the dough (that’s some carb love right there) with whole grain flour so it’s kind of healthy. They offer 75 percent local craft beers on their beer list and also offer wines on tap. And once you break your seal, to use the bathroom you kind of have to shimmy into the kitchen area and feel forever in the way. But enough about the logistics let’s get to the food porn!

One thing we love about Pizzeria Vetri is the option to give back to the world, like a karmic 401K.
The wood fired over that makes the pizza pies sparkle at Pizzeria Vetri.
Stretching the dough out at Pizzeria Vetri.
Making that pizza pie fly at Pizzeria Vetri.
We spied a whole slab of prosciutto, an Italian dry-cured ham that is usually thinly sliced and served uncooked; this style is called prosciutto crudo in Italian and is distinguished from cooked ham, prosciutto cotto.
One of the family style seating tables at Pizzeria Vetri.
The sparkling negroni with lo-fi sweet vermouth, campari, prosecco and orange and which makes the classic chardonnay seems dull by comparison.
Everybody should eat the shaved cauliflower salad at Pizzeria Vetri with baby kale, pistachio, golden raisins, scallion and honey vinaigrette. It’s light, delightful and seemingly healthy.
The wood oven insalate was a little too drenched in buttermilk dressing for my taste but somehow still enjoyable with roasted corn, zucchini, yellow squash, string beans, prosciutto cotto and mixed greens.
I could eat about 4 or 5 of these rotolo like Yoshi at Pizzeria Vetri. A perfect blend of mortadella meat, dough, ricotta cheese and pistacchio pesto, it was divine and for $5 each, a steal.
With a lovely list of non-alcoholic drink options, you have to have a blood orange sanpellegrino at Pizzeria Vetri. Also available, rosemary lemonade!
Our favorite pizza pie at Pizzeria Vetri was the crudo with prosciutto crudo, bufala mozzerella and parmigiano. Each bite was an excellent mix of sweet, salt and dough = pure foodgasm!
Our second favorite was the salsiccia with fennel sausage, roasted fennel, tomato sauce and mozzarella. It’s a classic taste that will not surprise the tastebuds but satisfy the pizza craving.
We went wild and added sardines to the quattro formaggi (four cheese) with gorgonzola, mozzerella, scamorza and fontina. We asked for mushrooms which they forgot to counterbalance the salt as these little salty fish overpowered the pizza but got some sprinkled on top before we left.
Because the fire inside that oven is mesmerizing at Pizzeria Vetri.
A delicious, clean, organic red wine cannot be passed up at Pizzeria Vetri. This Poderi Arcangelo will please the palate of even a non-red lover.
A super cheesy cannoli with a hint of sweetness at Pizzeria Vetri is the Italian way to do dessert.
Brilliance is born our of simplicity at Pizzeria Vetri and dropping their soft serve ice cream into a cappuccino seems amazingly obvious now. The creamy coffee ice cream flavor is good to the last drop!
